Rotary-Salvation Army Canned Food Drive

The annual Salvation Army Canned Food Drive is a community service project headed by the current President of the 25 Club. Each year, through collection of coins, special events and cash contributions, the Las Vegas Rotary Club, in a friendly competition with the Las Vegas Kiwanis Club raises money to help feed the hungry of Las Vegas. Through a partnership with the Three Square food bank, the Las Vegas Rotary is able to purchase cans of food for 9 cents each.

Since the start of the drive in 2009, our club has provided more than 895,000 cans of food for the 800-1000 people fed by the Salvation Army every day.

In some years, there has been a surplus of food purchased, which has allowed the Salvation Army to share the food with nearby charities such as Shade Tree shelter for abused women and children.

The drive begins each fall and culminates in a joint meeting with the Las Vegas Kiwanis Club the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. At the meeting there is an accounting of the drive’s efforts for the year and a good natured competition with the Kiwanis. The Las Vegas Rotary has “won” the fundraising competition in each recent year of the drive. However the real winners are the needy of Las Vegas.
